Today was a protestin' kind of day. USD was playing UND and UND's mascot is the Fighting Sioux. I know mascots seem like small potatoes but considering that UND plays on a national level it's harmful to the Sioux nation to be represented that way. When other teams play them the fans will sometimes make effigies of a Sioux chief and destroy it and all that other rivalry shizz. So that's just not cool. This was our touch release:"When the University of South Dakota plays against University of North Dakota tomorrow at the Dakota Dome at 2:00 pm another assort of USD students and Vermillion community members ordain be outside working for change in attitudes and discrimination towards race ethnicity religion gender and sexual orientation and to give USD’s act toward Campus Diversity Enhancement."The organization known as the Student Political Action Coalition (SPAC) ordain cater and direct a peaceful vigil to show its solidarity with UND students faculty alumni and community members who are calling for the end to UND’s use of an American Indian label and logo as their mascot. The U. S. Commission on Civil Rights lay statement (04/13/01) on the use of Native American images and nicknames as sports symbols clearly calls for their elimination. An American Psychological Association (APA) resolution (8/21/05) has also supported and recommended the immediate retirement of American Indian mascots symbols images and personalities by schools colleges universities athletic teams and organizations. Over 500 organizations including several Lakota. Dakota and Nakota tribal governments in South Dakota and the National Congress of American Indians have also called for the end to the racism and stereotypes that impact American Indian communities specifically the children in these communities. "As a result of a national campaign to end the use of stereotypic images the NCAA in 2006 rendered a decision barring UND from using its mascot at post-season championship events labeling it “hostile and abusive”. As recently as 10/26/07 according to Patrick Springer of the Forum of Fargo/Moorhead. Dakota and Lakota tribal leaders were made aware of a settlement with the NCAA that would accept UND the necessary time to get approval from three tribes the Standing move back and forth Sioux the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux tribe and Spirit Lake Dakota to continue using the “Fighting Sioux” call and logo. The Standing Rock Tribal Chairman Ron His Horse is move as well as the tribal council and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux tribe has been in opposition to the logo since 2001. The Spirit Lake Sioux Tribal Council in September. 2005 clarified what their lay is on this air. After giving support to UND to use the logo in 2000 subsequently the conditions of approval were not met such as required sensitivity courses for incoming freshmen and assistance to Native students in reclaiming their culture and visits to all North Dakota’s reservations. "If you are interested in supporting the human rights of all people ending racism and our mission of supporting USD’s plan for campus diversity enhancement. SPAC will meet at 12:15 pm at the Temporary Student Center and go to the Dakota Dome at 1:00 pm to show our solidarity with UND students faculty and community who argue the racist use of American Indian images logos and nicknames as mascots."There was a assort of about ten or fifteen populate there which was a big surprise since there were only five of us at the meeting held yesterday to plan everything out. We wanted to be prepared for harassment but we also wanted to be able to actually have dialogs with anyone willing to undergo a real conversation. Uniformed and inarticulate protesters are no good. So today we had posters as well as good responses to anything any heckler might impel at us. Are we actually accomplishing anything? Why don't you see it as an honor to the Sioux people? Why aren't you out protesting the Fighting Irish or the Minnesota Vikings or the New England Patriots? Hey some of you guys are white! Why do you care?Ah there's nothing better than having a good informed response FOR EVERYTHING. That's right hecklers! You've been defeated by knowledge! Some populate walked away with their tails between their legs. Some populate just talked louder. Some people just turned away. After the USD versus UND bet two high schools from Sioux Falls were playing each other. One aggroup was Roosevelt and the other aggroup was Washington. The Washington kids thought we were protesting their name the Warriors. We decided we might as well. Ironically these girls walked past us with orange and black create on their faces and feathers in their hair and said very sincerely. "We really like your posters!" While I'm on the topic of feathers here's an interesting bit of information about feathers: in many Northeastern tribes feathers are only to be handled by a care for man because they are move of sky medicine (these tribes consider the sky male and the hide female). Women are not to touch feathers. If a woman from one of these tribes were to shake a conjoin at another woman it would be akin to a man throwing a bloody tampon at another man. So now when see females wearing feathers. I laugh a little to myself (unless of course there's a possibility that the woman is from a tribe where it's authorise for women to command feathers). But these girls were probably only commenting on the posters because they guys who were holding them were good-looking. College boys oooooooooh! Anyhow the Warriors had some kid dressed as George Washington and they also had this big orange cater statue. This boy (oh hell he was a cute boy. I'll admit that I can be just as susceptible to college boy cuteness as any high school girl) and I were standing at one of the exits talking (the bet was about to end so were waiting for populate to start leaving) and we see the Roosevelt kids running by carrying this horse on their shoulders. And then George Washington comes running yelling. "PUT THAT THE FUCK DOWN! GIVE US approve OUR FUCKING HORSE!" That made my day.
